September 15: Luke 7:36-50
Key Verse: Luke 7:38
As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
Devotion:
Can you picture this event happening… the Pharisee was a man who had studied the scriptures and thought he knew it all until he met Jesus and saw there was so much more than just the knowledge. He had avoided mixing with sinners and had probably shunned them many a time before. He knew the local people and he knew of this woman’s past and what other people thought of her.
Everything in him was probably wanting to put this woman out of the house and yet Jesus was allowing her to not just come close to Him but to wash His feet with her tears and her hair. She then proceeded to pour the perfume on His newly washed feet. This sort of thing was not normal for ordinary people!
When the Pharisee questioned Jesus’ judgement, Jesus told him a story about two people who were in debt to a money-lender; when they were forgiven their debt, it is supposed the person with the bigger debt would be more thankful. What this was intended to do was to show this woman was giving Jesus everything she had just to be close to Him.
Jesus then turned to the woman and said “your sins are forgiven!” Not only was this unheard of because nobody had the authority to forgive sins at that time, but He also said her faith had saved her and allowed her to go in peace. Jesus had the power to forgive all sins and what He did for us demonstrated clearly we have the ability to have our sins forgiven simply by looking to Him and believing!
Points to Ponder:
How much are you willing to give to be close to Jesus?
Nothing we have is enough to have our sins forgiven except our belief in Christ!
