October 17: Ephesians 2:1-10
Key Verse: Ephesians 2:3
All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.
Devotion:
Many people are put off of religion when they see a statement like this which calls us sinners and makes us feel bad. But this is the end result of reading the Word of God. The scriptures were given to us so we may know what we are doing wrong. Again, many people thinks it stops there because they are ‘bad people’ but what Christ has done for us has set us free from the blame and the punishment we deserve from our sins.
If we try to live our lives without God, we begin to see the things in life which look good because they make some others happy. If we continue to watch those people we will see that happiness does not last too long because they begin to see the error of their ways and sink into a pit of despair.
God saw we were not able to get out of this rut by ourselves and so allowed Jesus to come down to earth and pay for the sins we have done with His own life. Because Jesus had done nothing wrong and was blameless, He was offered up as a perfect sacrifice for our wrongdoings. Just as God had demanded sacrifices without blemish, Jesus stepped forward as the sacrifice without a blemish once and for all!
It is not anything we are able to do which will make us ‘not guilty’ for our sins. It is what Jesus did for us in our stead. It is because of the grace of our Lord we are able to stand up and say we are not guilty!
Points to Ponder:
How many laws have you broken in the bible?
Jesus made it so you are not guilty for every single one of them!
