Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

We must be very careful in understanding that the law of the Lord is not just the scriptures written down by Moses. It is not just the New Testament as live through by Jesus.

The law of the Lord is everything that God teaches us and all that we have before us from the prophets, disciples, apostles and everyone else who has contributed to it.

It is that law which will convict us from the inside. It is the truth that Jesus supported all through His ministry that will keep us going, giving us wisdom every step forward.

Ecclesiastes 2:14 The wise man’s eyes are in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. Yet I myself perceived that the same event happens to them all.

I guess we would all look pretty silly if our eyes were not in our heads so let us not take this phrase literally!

It is only a fool who would walk around with their eyes closed on purpose, or walk around in complete darkness when they could switch on a few lights!

But many people still seem to choose the wrong ways, choosing as if they did have their eyes closed or in complete darkness.

Don’t blame yourself for everything though because stuff does happen – in other words bad things do happen to good people and visa versa.

John 11:10 But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”

Jesus’ response to the disciples questioning was to make them think about their own lack of wisdom and not to question His wisdom.

We don’t have to look very hard at our lives to find the mistakes we make or the wrong choice we have made.

God does not have this problem but wants us to know all about it! We need to see where we are going in life and the best way is to ask direction from the one who knows the directions!

Asking God for direction will always work and the answers will always be the best!

John 11:8 The disciples said to Him, “Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone You, and are You going there again?”

The disciples could not quite fathom out why Jesus would walk into a trap! We too have worries when we see people walking straight into traps – it just does not seem logical!

There are some things in life that are going to happen no matter what and we have to accept those things; the more we are willing to work with and around them the more we can move forward.

Jesus knew what had to be done and chose to do what was right. Are we really willing to put aside our own safety to do what is right?

2 Samuel 14:11 She said, ‘Then let the king invoke the Lord his God to prevent the avenger of blood from adding to the destruction, so that my son shall not be destroyed.’ ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’ he said, ‘not one hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.’

Today as we remember all those that have fallen before us in churches all round the United Kingdom and beyond, let us petition our Lord in the same manner as this woman requested of the king.

We have seen death and destruction, much of which is based on man’s greed and pride; so let us never treat those sins as normal in our lives. They are not.

This woman was sent by Joab to break down barriers. Sometimes we need a push too!

Thank you Lord for opening our hearts to your love.

James 1:8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

Trying to follow someone who cannot make their mind up is pretty difficult because you are not sure which way you should be going.

Trying to understand a person who is not consistent in their approach to life is very difficult as well.

We should try to be as consistent as we can in following God and following His will in our lives.

Don’t try to please all people all the time because it will split your heart and confuse you!

Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

No matter how clean we want to believe that our hearts are, they are not. We have them filled with all manner of sin as we live in this world amongst the sin.

No matter how much we try to mop up dirt or water, we are left with a residue. It is only when we use chemicals or specialist tools that can get things looking clean again.

God is able to do so much more than the chemicals and tools because He can create a new heart within us that no longer attracts the sin we have lived for before.

Nothing can touch your spirit but God!

Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

God wants to change us from the inside by removing the heart of pride that we have and replacing it with a servant heart willing to work with Him.

If we have a heart that did not care we would be just like the animals out there, just doing stuff because that is what we do.

God gave us hearts to love one another and we need to allow that love to work from within, not block it out.

Luke 11:12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

No matter which way you look at this, it is just absurd. Why would anyone give a person such a horrible thing when they ask for something they need?

Why then do we doubt that God will give us something we need when we ask for it from Him?

We are people, we play jokes, we do things wrong, we are horrible at times, and yet we give people what they need if they ask; God can do so much more for us!

Don’t try to be nice to others, try to be more like Christ!

Matthew 7:10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent?

How do you actually treat other people, and how do you treat other Christians, and how do you treat people you don’t like?

Is it fair of me to ask such questions? Absolutely!

God does not call us to just treat the people we like as friends. He does not say that we only have to be nice to church people. He calls us to love everybody because we are all created by Him!

If we can be nice to the people we love, what is really stopping us from being nice to others?

It’s us. That is all. Break down a barrier today and be nice!

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

When you do something wrong it is always hard to come forward and say sorry with a truly humble heart.

Having to admit to various things can be very difficult as well; but Christ wants us to do exactly that for Him.

Christ wants us to open up our hearts to Him and to allow the wonderful things of His to come forward.

We find it easy to come to Him and ask for help when things go wrong, so why should we not be very happy about all that is going on?

Titus 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

Christ has demonstrated the ultimate instance of kindness and love that anyone could think of in giving us Salvation through His actions.

It is not because of the thing that He has done but the mercy He has shown us that we know this to be true.

Martyrs have come and gone, but it is the love and demonstration of that love which stands out for me.

It is the Holy Spirit who can open up our hearts to what Christ has done when we start to listen with our hearts.

Ephesians 4:23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

Have you noticed that the harder you try to make sure you keep to the law the more the small things seem to go wrong?

It is not in our own strength that we can live for God but in His strength and in His guidance alone.

We cannot hope to be able to do all the right things all the time just by focusing on the law because we are all carnal and we all get things wrong.

The harder we try to more we realise this – make sure you let God lead you through His Spirit!

1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.

Well, Halloween is upon us and we are all wondering what we should do about it… the answer is surprisingly simple but one that people don’t want to get involved with.

If you aim at things of this world then the only reward you will get is of this world. If you aim for Halloween then the only enjoyment you will get is of this world and you may end up feeling ill from the worldly ways.

But if you keep your focus on God and allow Him to guide and protect you, then the ways of the world will not be that exciting…

To get the most enjoyment out of life, keep God in the centre of your life.

Ecclesiastes 11:9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; Walk in the ways of your heart, And in the sight of your eyes; But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment.

I look back on life and I think to myself “why didn’t life have a warning label on it?” and then I look at how much I tried to teach my children and the youth around me and I think “Oh, it did!”

As young people we should try to discern good from evil and apply good in our lives so that we may not have to put up with the judgment afterward; but it is hard to listen…

There is so many loud noises to distract us from the good path and from listening to others who try to teach us those ways that we tend to fall off the rails far more than we should.

Is there a way out of this? Try to look for and aim for good and enjoy it!

Proverbs 10:25 When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.

One of the big temptations we have is looking for the buzz or excitement in life. We try to seek out where we can get the next buzz from rather than trying to make peace.

No you certainly are not alone in thinking that you still do like it now and again even as a Christian!

Look at a bit of history though. The evil people do not make that big an impact on history as the good people do. Each generation looks to find excitement in its own generation and not by reading books about it.

Evil is very harmful, but it has no staying power!

Proverbs 10:23 To do evil is like sport to a fool, But a man of understanding has wisdom.

When people get up to mischief, we can be sure that they are treating it much like a sport and not looking at the consequences of their actions.

And let’s be honest, we have all been there, done that and have the T-shirt; so no turning round and blaming others – look inside your own life first of all.

When we do begin to understand consequences and to look at how much we hurt other people when we do wrong, we begin to gain understanding of life; or wisdom.

I know I have had to learn for a very long time before I have gained any understanding; but I thank God He is persistent in teaching me!

Luke 6:48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.

In order to build a house that is going to stand up to the very worst that the weather can throw at it, we should aim to build it on the best possible foundations.

Lighthouses are built on rocks, not just to warn ships away from those rocks, but because they have a better chance at surviving!

For us to survive in life we should build our lives on the best foundation… and that is love, the love that Christ has shown us from the beginning.

Ephesians 3:17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

It is not how much strength and wisdom we can dig up, accept or take in that will shape how well we get on in life…

It is how much God is willing and able to fill us with!

All we need to have is faith that we will be able to accept something from God and we can then allow Him to fill our lives with as much as we need.

He knows our needs better that we do and is able to fill our needs in ways that we cannot comprehend. All Him to work in your life!

Proverbs 4:6 Do not forsake her, and she will preserve you; Love her, and she will keep you.

When we do gain wisdom and understanding from God we should be keeping it and growing with it as if it were as special to us as the person we love.

God wants us to understand many things, including our life with Him; we do not have to understand every single aspect immediately, but grow consistently with Him.

Keeping what we learn in our hearts and living by it will go a long way for us to understand things better,

Loving God means loving all aspects of Him including His law.
