Proverbs 21:20 The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.

There is so much in this world we strive for, money, wealth, clothes, houses; so many physical goals to aim for – all of which can be gained lawfully and enjoyed!

But if we are simply going to waste them, break them, be foolish with them, then we are not gaining much from them.

Storing things and looking after things will help us to get more enjoyment out of them.

So how much more enjoyment can you get out of the spiritual things which can mean so much more to us!

Proverbs 21:17 Whoever loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich.

What is pleasure to you? Is it all the sport, hobbies, pastimes, music, dancing, technology or what?

If we are simply going to focus on the physical, then the only rewards we will see and enjoy are the physical rewards – we will use what we have to gain more physical rewards…

If we were to drink and eat all our money away, we will probably become unhealthy and end up not enjoying what we thought was good.

The same goes for anything physical – but spiritual hunger goes much deeper and is more fulfilling!

Proverbs 21:13 Whoever shuts their ears to the cry of the poor will also cry out and not be answered.

When we turn our back on the poor and needy, we may well find others turning their back on us in our time of need. This is not God punishing you for not being there for the poor, but rather what other people do!

We have God’s rules and laws in front of us, but we do not always obey them. Being told to forgive or to look after is one thing, but doing it is another.

God wants us to be doers of the word and not just hearers or readers. There is merit in taking God’s word in, but more merit in carrying out what we read.

Pray and Obey.

Matthew 18:35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

This does sound very harsh; Jesus saying the people will not be forgiven if they are not willing to forgive others first of all…

Do we think we should have the right of forgiveness if we are not willing to live by those rules first? Forgiveness has to start somewhere and the best place to start is inside you.

When you are willing to forgive and move on then you will begin to see God in His true colours; His love goes so much further than ours ever can.

Psalm 86:15 But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

King David is listed as a great man of God in our bibles, and yet he was a sinner who broke some pretty serious rules in his lifetime!

So why is he listed as a great man of God? Because when he did listen to God, he was used by God is a great way. So was David actually great? He was, because God held him up!

God truly is compassionate, loving, faithful and very slow to anger – even though we push Him every day and do so many things wrong every day! Thank God!

Psalm 36:7 How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

Who has God showed His unfailing love to? To us, mere mortals, sinners, poor, lonely; however you describe yourself, God shows His love toward you – and it is without end.

For those who are full of pride and deceit, God’s love may feel hidden, but it is still there patiently waiting for the person to put aside their own feelings and follow God instead.

It is little wonder then that Christians all around the world put their faith and trust in God, resting themselves under His protective wings just as a chick hides under its parents wings.

Psalm 23:6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

No matter how far we have fallen, how far we run, how much we get wrong, God’s goodness and mercy will always stretch out to us and allow us to come back to Him.

No matter how long we have been away from God, how long we have not believed or how long we get things wrong, God continues to wait and is willing to forgive.

He wants us to dwell with Him where we are safe and sound, where He can protect and save us – always and forever.

Psalm 52:8 But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever.

When God plants something, it will always be there. So much of the time we tend to go overboard and break everything God gives us, but the gifts are still there.

God asks us to be fruitful, by sharing the gospel with others so they too can be rooted in His kingdom.

It is not for us to supply all the nourishment the plants need because God continues to do that – we are caretakers, doing God’s work for others to grow with.

Trust in God, in His mercy and grace, forever!

Hosea 14:8 Ephraim, what more have I to do with idols? I will answer him and care for him. I am like a flourishing juniper; your fruitfulness comes from me.

Even before Christ came to be man with us, the Jews were going through turbulent times of choosing to live with God and choosing to make their own gods; just as we do today!

Our gods may not be little statues anymore but we do follow man-made things of this world rather than following God…

There will, hopefully, be a time when we see exactly what we are doing and we choose to follow Christ again, once and for all.

A life with Christ may be hard, but it certainly if fruitful and delightful!

John 6:40 For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

It is not God’s will to leave anyone behind or to lose anyone, it is His wish to have us all safe and with Him in heaven in the end; but He has left the choice to us.

We have to choose whether we are going to spend eternity lost and searching or found and safe with Him.

Sounds like a no-brainer like that, but every choice we make to follow the world instead of following Christ is taking us a step further away from that position.

Be safe – stay with Christ!

Matthew 12:50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

When Jesus earthly family came to try and find Him to speak to Him, He ignored them and continued teaching the people around Him.

When questioned about ignoring His family, the response was to remind us all that we are one Christian family and we need to act like it!

If we are willing to do come together and stick together as a family, others will see just how good it is to be in a loving family and will be encouraged to join in.

Don’t disregard your earthly family because they need to be encouraged into this Christian family if they are not already in!

James 1:22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

How well do you listen to God’s word? How well do you sit and listen in church when the preacher is talking? How much do you study your bible?

I guess the answer to all of these questions for all of us is “not enough!” but what happens afterward?

It is one thing to look, listen, study and meditate on God’s Word, but another thing to do what it says!

We are reminded here by James that God wants us to be doers or His Word – go out and do what it says!

1 Corinthians 3:18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.

We like to think we can serve God through all the stuff we do and all the stuff we get others to do – but where is that coming from?

Is it coming from the need to fulfil certain tasks in order to gain a blessing from God, or is it coming straight from your heart because you love Christ?

It is a hard one to admit to doing wrong – but if you can get over your need to do things for God and start loving Him and following out of love, then your relationship with Him will grow deeper and stronger!

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

Can God actually see into your heart? Yes! Do we really understand what is in our own hearts? Not really…

God is able to see the potential, the real depth of our hearts. We only scratch the surface and in doing so we get a whole lot of things messed up!

But God concentrates on what he knows is there and what He knows can come out of us – it is the hidden potential to worship Him He is after.

Allow God to bring out the best in you and shut off the things we cannot control…

Proverbs 15:11 Death and Destruction lie open before the LORD— how much more do human hearts!

Nothing is hidden from God. He sees all and knows all. And yet we still struggle with things because we do not remember just how much He loves us!

He was willing to allow His only Son to die on a cross for us – yet we still refuse to see His love.

Stop worrying about the things in life you have no control on and give them to God. He is watching and waiting for you call for help. He wants to help! Call out now!

Psalm 55:23 But you, God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of decay; the bloodthirsty and deceitful will not live out half their days. But as for me, I trust in you.

King David continued to trust God to bring down his enemies. He knew he would have a very hard time coming up against them and he knew there would be a lot of lives lost in trying.

But he also knew God would not allow them to live in their deceit, hatred and pride for very long.

Don’t try and bring down the evil ones alone, rather build up your army in God and allow Him to guide you through your battles in life, whatever they may be!

Jeremiah 17:11 Like a partridge that hatches eggs it did not lay are those who gain riches by unjust means. When their lives are half gone, their riches will desert them, and in the end they will prove to be fools.

Mankind is not alone in trying to get rich from other people. The animal kingdom has its fair share of animals which do the same.

God warns us there is no gain in doing evil to try and gain from it; the best way forward is with truth and honesty as your guides.

God is watching over each one of us, and just like the animals lose out when they try to gain from others, so will we lose out; maybe not from God’s direct intervention, but mankind’s intervention!

Luke 12:20 But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

Let us never forget that we are fully and wholly accountable to our creator God! Whatever earthly things we manage to do here on earth are of no consequence in Heaven.

God alone knows our time of birth and death; He alone knows where we should be to give our best… so listen and obey!

There may be times when we do not understand why we are being asked to do something and times when we just don’t like what God is asking us to do – but those are the time when we need to listen closer!

James 2:5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

If you have not noticed the assortment of people in your local congregation, then I fear it is not a true representation of the church.

Christ chose people who were poor in earthly terms to make the biggest contributions to the church in spiritual terms – this was not by chance.

We set our minds on earthly goals and ways, forgetting that God crosses all boundaries and chooses people who are going to be faithful.

Give up chasing the world and follow God with a good conscience!

Deuteronomy 1:17 Do not show partiality in judging; hear both small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Bring me any case too hard for you, and I will hear it.

When we are looking to pick leaders or trying to be a leader ourselves, we need to have a look at how the Bible describes a few simple rules about leaders.

Final judgement is God’s and we should not forget that, but in order to help in earthly judgement, justice and fairness, we need to look at a bigger picture than just our friends.

We need to look at everyone involved and not to take sides based on our friends, circle of influence, upbringing or any other personal stuff.

Justice belongs to God and whatever we do is watched over by Him very carefully!
