1 Timothy 1:18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare,

Paul’s letter to Timothy was uplifting and quite personal to start with but also reminded Timothy of all the things that had come before Him.

Paul was making sure that Timothy would not forget all that Christ had done before this moment so that he would not be discouraged! There is nothing like being told one thing as the truth only to find out a different truth later!

We do need God’s Word to encourage us every step of the way; without it we will not be able to make sure the truth survives – we are too weak to do that!

1 Timothy 1:5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith,

None of us can claim to have a clean or pure heart! We all fail miserably when it comes down to righteousness in our hearts because of the sin in our life.

But when we spend time taking in God’s Word and allowing it to dwell there, we find that it teaches us how to change from the inside out. God continues to guide us through the Holy Spirit!

The more we apply the bible into our lives, the more we are able to live for Him. That conscience that He has embedded into our lives allows us to grow day by day.

Colossians 3:14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.

I can think of nothing greater to hold any relationship together than love; and that is exactly what Christ continues to remind us of too!

Love is not something that you can pretend about and is certainly not something you can hide. Christ allowed His love to flow out and bind us all together.

Christ wants us to allow our love to flow out to one another so that we can be bound as true Christian brothers and sisters. Without that real, true, abiding and humble love, we have nothing!

Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

When we walk in love we walk in a very different way to our normal walk. I’m not talking about the physical walk, like some strange swagger of a gang member, but our walk through life!

When we live with Christ in our lives, our lives begin to have many things focused on what He wants in our lives and His goodness and mercy start to shine through us for others to see.

Christ loved us from the beginning and willingly gave up His own life so that we can get more still from Him! His love knows no bounds but continues to shine through each and every day!

John 10:15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

A good shepherd will always get to know his sheep and make sure that they are always safe and sound. He will try to pre-empt things before they happen and get his sheep to fully trust in him.

Christ uses these words to relate to the people of this time; nowadays we don’t know too much about sheep so we don’t get the deeper meaning behind these words unless we study things through.

Our bibles are a treasure trove of wisdom and we need to take the words in until they encourage us to find out more about what is written down. God’s Word is there to teach us how to use His Word!

Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

How many times have you thought about this verse and wondered why it could be said when we are also told that God chose the Israelites as His race?

In God’s eyes we are all human beings and we all deserve the same chance at getting to know Him; we are all given the same free gift of salvation and when it comes down to it, we are all given the same chance at being saved by Him!

Christ came to seek and to save the world and not to divide and conquer the world! Because we have all the same choice we are neither looked at as being slaves not at being free! We all belong to Him because He has bought us with His blood already!

Psalm 22:30 Posterity will serve him; future generations will be told about the Lord.

Sometimes we may think that there is nobody else trying to make sure that the gospel gets told to the next generation, but God has promised us that His story will never go untold.

No matter how much we turn our back on Him, He will always make sure that there is someone else ready to tell others about Christ!

God has been faithful to this promise from the beginning of time and will continue with this promise until it is time for us all to go back with Christ! Never give up telling someone else about God!

Jeremiah 33:22 I will make the descendants of David my servant and the Levites who minister before me as countless as the stars in the sky and as measureless as the sand on the seashore.

When God promised to give Abraham more descendants than he could count it was not a promise that Abraham would be able to see happen during his lifetime, but something that he would have to trust would come to pass.

God is not always going to deliver things to our front doors so that we see everything the way we want to; sometimes He delivers stuff that we only get to hear about well after we think it was overdue.

God knows the perfect time for things because He is not limited by time like we are. We need to rely fully on God and not impose our own limits on what He can do!

Jeremiah 31:36 If those ordinances depart From before Me, says the Lord, Then the seed of Israel shall also cease From being a nation before Me forever.

Jeremiah had some horrible things to tell the people of Israel, but this is not one of them. This should give all people hope in our eternal and all powerful God!

Here God is reminding us that He is in control of everything both here on earth and in the heavens above! Not just the ordering of electrons in an atom but the very cosmos itself is being held together by God!

For as long as we can see we still have stars above we should have confidence that God’s promises continue to stand just as they were in the beginning! Awesome!

Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

When we look at big strong buildings or things like the pyramids we may be forgiven for thinking that they will last forever, but when we look at how much things change over time we begin to realise that everything decays or grows old.

But when we look to God’s Word we see that it continues to stand unchanging and forever!

That is not to say that we read the same words as they did back when scribes were writing things down for king David, but rather that God’s Words that He has had committed to paper have remained available for us all throughout time.

God does not change! It is our perception that changes. Focus on God to see the Solid Rock!

Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.

If we start to think about what is actually sinful in our lives we may be in for a huge shock! All unrighteousness is sin! Everything that is contrary to the law of God is sin!

This gives us a considerable problem in that we cannot get over that barrier unless we have a Saviour who is able to lift us over it!

God is not just merciful and graceful, but merciful and graceful enough to overcome any sin that we have committed in our past – so long as we are willing to bring it before Him with all honesty!

Galatians 3:25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

Before we accept Christ as our Saviour, we are still very much in a learning role where we are trying to understand many things; for that we do need a teacher to help us to understand things.

But when we trust in Christ, He has promised to give us the Holy Spirit to give us the understanding that we desire.

After be trust in Christ we are no longer stuck as a scholar seeking something new, but rather we grow in our own time as we learn for ourselves from the Holy Spirit. We grow from being like a scholar to being more like an undergraduate.

Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Faith in itself is not our justification but rather the faith we have will justify our lives with Christ when we sit down and truly think things through.

Sometimes we are put off by people who will mock us or will say things like “it is not real” or “it is just a bunch of words”; but if we are willing to take those words and study them through properly we will find out just how special God’s Word is!

The truth is hard to ignore when we do find it out, and by believing in that truth our lives are changed through the peace and self-assurance that God gives us; and all because Christ was willing to give His life for us.

John 5:22 For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son

God does not judge anyone without Jesus Christ being a part of the decision making. Why? Because it is Jesus who willingly gave His own life for our sins.

God is the judge of the whole world, but each individual will be judged according to his own life choices.

We have the choice as to whether we believe Christ and trust Him to forgive us, or whether we put our trust in ourselves and see what happens!

Don’t take a chance, go with the certainty of Christ’s grace!

Luke 10:16 He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.

Jesus did not go about His ministry telling people how much He loved them and healing everyone all the time… there were times when He told people the harsh truth and they did not like it!

We find the same as we go out and tell people of the truth because not everyone wants to hear the truth; how would you like to be told something you thought was true was just a lie.

God wants us all to love Him openly and truthfully. There is no way that He will accept lies and no way that He will put up with people saying they love Him when they speak against Christ!

Proverbs 8:34 Blessed is the man who listens to me, Watching daily at my gates, Waiting at the posts of my doors.

It is a wise man who will listen to instruction and a wise leader who will listen to advice as well. If we are willing to listen then we can learn from everybody.

It does not have to be the brainiest of doctors who teach us, not the greatest of speakers, but someone who is willing to teach the truth or talk about God.

Wisdom comes from hearing and hearing come through listening; but it should be that we listen always to ensure we do not miss those wise words spoken.

Waiting on God continually strengthens us and shed the truth about us!

1 Kings 10:8 Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom!

When the queen of Sheeba came to Solomon to find out about his wisdom and to improve her own, she was probably not prepared for all that she saw and heard.

She saw just how happy the men of Israel were under his guidance and how they thrived in knowing that their king was so wise all the time.

By the end of her visit she knew that this came from God and that it was God who deserved the praise; but the happiness belonged to the people who came under that God, our God!

Romans 11:29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

What is or was the most memorable thing about 2013 for you?

For me the biggest thing about this last year was the fact that I finally started to do something for God that I had been telling Him I would do for many years!

Each of us like to promise something to others, but we don’t always follow through with those promises.

God’s grace goes beyond any of our promises because He will never ask for that back. He has shown us grace and continues to show us grace. Please accept it in this coming year!

Isaiah 49:15 Can a woman forget her nursing child, And not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, Yet I will not forget you.

One of the things I will always find hardest to come to terms with is when a parent walks away from a child. I know that I am not the greatest parent at times, but I will always be here for my children no matter what!

To me, the love a parent has for the offspring is probably the strongest bond between two people, and yet we see that broken from time to time.

God’s love for us goes far beyond what we can imagine between parents and children. God’s love has no bounds. God’s love is eternal. God’s love is awesome!

Luke 11:11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?

When you look at all the things that you may have been given over the past few days, you may begin to see how other people love and care for you.

Even in times of distress and time when you think nothing is going right, there is always something special that will happen to lift up your spirits.

We need to remember those times and be encouraged; and if you see someone else discouraged or struggling, then try give them a hand up or encourage them in some way. It may just be the gift of love they have been waiting for!
