Acts 7:41 That was the time they made an idol in the form of a calf. They brought sacrifices to it and revelled in what their own hands had made.
It sounds such a silly idea – to put all your wealth in a pile, melt it down to make a statue and then worship the statue you made...
This is what we get up to in our daily lives. We take our wealth and use it to build up things which have no real value and spend our time doing things with them instead of what is real in life!
God wants us to remember to focus on what is real and true. Don’t lose focus on God just because life gets to seem overwhelming!

John 3:13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven – the Son of Man.
One thing Jesus said which is a leveller of mankind is ‘nobody has done into heaven except the one who came from Heaven!’
I do marvel at some of the extraordinary things people claim about where they have been and how they have survived – I just try to get on with my life and give God the glory I am still alive.
We have amazing doctors and nurses, many of whom helped to keep me alive last year, but it is God who must get the ultimate glory for putting everything in place so I can come back and praise Him, always!

John 3:7 You should not be surprised at my saying, “You must be born again.”
God wants us to live changed lives in this world so we can be seen and people who are very different from the world.
We should not be worldly people who make a difference, but different people who live in this world.
When Jesus said these words to Nicodemus (and others) He wanted him to stop and realise the difference between being in the world and being of the world.
Change! Be different! Be what God wants you to be!

Luke 11:13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!
What is your favourite memory about receiving a much-loved gift for a birthday or Christmas?
Can you remember just how much joy that gift gave you then? How long did that joy last for?
Christ has given us a gift which we cannot compare to any other gift because it is so special and will last for eternity instead of just one moment.
Accept Christ’s gift with open arms!

Luke 11:11 Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
OK, jokes aside... It’s not going to help anyone to give them something they fear when they are asking for love or attention!
Sometimes we may act like this without thinking because we don’t like the person asking or because we have held something against them.
God asks us to forgive so we can continue to show other people His love through sharing and caring.

Mark 9:40 for whoever is not against us is for us.
How many times have you tried to stop someone doing something just because you think your way is better than theirs?
Sometimes we do have to step back and allow people to do things their own way; they will be more encouraged by find out they are able to do things!
Jesus wants us to gain courage by doing things for Him – often we may think we cannot do it just because someone says we can’t!
Believe and trust in God above all others!

Daniel 9:6 We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors, and to all the people of the land.
Who is it you listen to when you pray? Do you listen out for God or do you give in and follow the rest of the people?
Far too often in our lives we do give in to peer pressure and do things God has asked us to avoid – not because we want to rebel, but because it is easier to give in and do them instead of making a stand!
God wants us to make a stand and allow people to see we are willing to do so – our faith will give rise to hope for others!

John 14:22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, ‘But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?’
You may think this a weird question to come from Judas, but we ask ourselves these sorts of questions all the time – and it is right to do so!
Where would our faith be if we blindly accepted anything and everything we heard. It is good to question and good to make things settle in your own minds and hearts.
Question things, but listen to God for explanations – don't run off and make conspiracy theories just to satisfy your mind!

Jude 1:22 Be merciful to those who doubt;
I love these words from Jude. Be merciful to the doubters...
I have always had an issue with the words Jesus told the disciples – to dust off their feet and leave the places where people would not listen.
I understand why Jesus said that because there is an urgency to our work as disciples, but we also have to show those who doubt mercy.
How else will someone get to know God until you show up and show mercy just like Jesus did?

Mark 2:7 ‘Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?’
Can you imagine the uproar when the church leaders watched as Jesus, a human being, forgave the paralysed man!
We must never forget Jesus is the Son of God and was given full authority by God to do many things... Just as Jesus gave disciples the authority to go out and heal people too.
Trust in God and obey what He asks, even if it is to reach down into the gutter and help a poorly soul, forgotten by the world...

Psalm 51:7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
How brave do you feel?
Are you willing to step forward and ask God to cleanse you?
We often talk about our good lives as Christians, but we all know we still have issues in our lives.
God has promised to forgive us and letting Him in to do that forgiveness can be a big step for some of us.
But one which is truly liberating!

Deuteronomy 11:11 But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys that drinks rain from heaven.
Even when the Israelites were going into “a land flowing with milk and honey,” they were told what it would be like...
Not a land of flat plains where they would have to irrigate all the time to tend to crops, but a land of mountains and valleys where God would supply their water.
What God was saying is life would radically change for them and they would have to depend on Him more than before.

Mark 10:37 They replied, 'Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.'
We all like to think we can have a seat next to Jesus when we get to Heaven; just like James and John said to Jesus when He asked what they wanted.
The truth is far greater than we can imagine - we are going to be in Heaven!
As much as we try to think what being in Heaven is going to be like, no words can effectively explain just how glorious it is going to be, so we ask for more... It's what we do...

Matthew 26:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.’
Is it OK to ask God for help? Of course it is, no matter what is going on in your life, you can ask for help!
Jesus lay face down to pray to His Father and ask if there was any other way of being able to save us other than having to face what He knew was coming!
Jesus knew it had to be done, but He still asked... just in case there was something God could do.
When we think there is nothing left – we can still ask God for help, any time, any place!

Psalms 100:1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Don’t you just want to get out there and shout out your praises to God alongside hundreds of other people?
I know I have missed my summer of Christian gatherings where we can be with thousands of other Christians and all sing out in praise and worship together...
But we are in the middle of a global crisis and we need to act accordingly so we can protect one another.
Have you thought about meeting together with a single friend so you can talk about Christ together – surely it will help our well-being, both spiritually and mentally.

Luke 18:32 He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him;
What would you do if you knew you were going to get beaten up? Would you still go to get beaten up, or would you try to find a way out of it?
Be honest, we would all try to avoid getting beaten up because it’s not a nice thing to happen to you!
We know Jesus was not looking forward to it and He did ask God if there was any other way other than being crucified for us...
But, because of His love for us, He stepped forward and allowed this all to happen to Him...

Luke 9:17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
When we stop trying to do it all, we find we can do more by allowing others to work with us...
It is hard to let go and allow others to do more when you have spent a lot of time being in control, but God can do so much more when you allow Him to work!
I love watching people thrive when they allow God to work through and with them instead of trying to do things their own way.
I know I have failed many times when I have tried to get it all the way I think it should be done – God can do so much more – let Him!

Luke 6:10 He looked round at them all, and then said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ He did so, and his hand was completely restored.
I love the way Jesus still worked miracles and did things on the Sabbath even though people had made their minds up about what should or shouldn’t be done!
Jesus was not scared to stand up for God and make sure people knew the power of God every day of the week – even on the days when people were not supposed to be doing stuff!
God wants us to continue loving and caring for the poor even though the world around us is crumbling.
We can work sensibly and carefully and safely – allow God to guide you and not your personal desires!

1 Kings 18:46 The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
I love this verse which highlights the power God can give us and the way the world will look strangely at us when we do God’s business!
People have looked sideways at me when I have said I am off to do something for God like I was going against what was logical or right...
My response is God knows much better than I do what can be done and people are far too often blinkered by red tape to see what is possible.
Trust in what God can do with you!

2 Samuel 12:21 His attendants asked him, ‘Why are you acting in this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!’
Many people do frown at the way we act as Christians, not so much because we are weird, but because we go against their perceived ideas of how we should act.
We need to act according to our true relationship with God and not according to religious expectations.
We need to show people why we do things the way we do so they can make informed decisions about a loving caring God who does not go back on His word!
Trust in God’s promises!
