2 Timothy 2:23 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.
We all know how stupid words or arguments will produce even bigger arguments, distrust and distress with all involved – but we all continue to say stupid things!
If we had a little person sitting on our shoulders whispering into our ears when we are about to do or say stupid things, we would get into a lot less trouble...
If we are willing to allow God to guide us, we have that person on our shoulders every minute of every day – just listen!

Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
If there was one thing my Dad taught me, it can be summarized in this verse.
God does not teach us to be the most prosperous people in the financial world, nor the greatest scientific minds, but the greatest and humblest hearts...
It is not all the money in the bank, or the cars in the drive, or the food on the shelves... but the Godly love in your heart!

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Don’t try and create your own light to live by, rather live in the light which is Jesus Christ.
God sent His Son to be this light we can live by and through His example we should be rebuilding our broken societies by showing them the light to live by.
Allow Christ to guide you and share His Word with all people in your community – allow His light to shine through you!

Judges 4:4 Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at that time.
Can you imagine the uproar when Deborah was chosen as the prophet to lead Israel – this is a man-based society who don’t take kindly to woman telling them what to do!
But God chose Deborah for a reason, one which has probably been forgotten over time because men like to be in charge!
We have some pretty awesome women who are church leaders now, not to rock the boat but because God chose them! Follow them because God says so!

Matthew 4:25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
How much do you miss going to church? I know I miss the meeting and greeting and sharing; even though I spend much of my time behind the sound desks...
What do you do in order to get to hear a church service – especially when the country is in lockdown 3.0!
We get so used to searching for so many things online – but how much do we search for God’s word? How about searching for an online service...

Exodus 20:6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
When God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, He made sure they knew He was a jealous God – the first commandment.
But He also wanted us to know He would show love to generations upon generations of people who are willing to love Him as He loves us!
Keeping His commandments is just one way we can show Him we do love and respect Him in the very best way we can.

Proverbs 25:23 Like a north wind that brings unexpected rain is a sly tongue – which provokes a horrified look.
Be careful what you say in the heat of the moment – you may well be breaking someone else’s life instead of building them up like Jesus wants us to do.
Just one harsh word could break someone’s heart and leave all those around wondering why you would ever say something so bad... just look at the results of some politicians recently!
God wants us to consider what comes out of our mouths so we build up people rather than break them down!

Proverbs 18:24 One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
What happens when a friend does not turn up when they said they would, or forgets about something special arranged between you?
It is not nice to be let down, especially by friends, but there are times when we will do the letting down too – because we are human, and we do get things wrong!
But God continues to stand by our sides and continues to be there for us, not matter what time it is and no matter where or when we are. God is always here with us!

Mark 7:6 He replied, ‘Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: ‘“These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
It is nothing new to see the difference between people who say the right stuff and people who do the right stuff.
I hope and pray I fit into the second category in other people's eyes because that is what I try to do with God!
It is important to set a Godly example and not just say Godly things; we are the light and salt in our communities by which others will be encouraged or discouraged by.

Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
Jesus has taught us to pray a simple prayer which means and contains so much – ending in the plea to ask God’s forgiveness and to pass on forgiveness to others in the same manner.
If we want to live a life of peace with God, we need to start by living that life of peace with others.
If we start out in the right manner, we will find it much easier to follow Jesus’ instructions to love one another!

Psalm 28:1 To you, Lord, I call; you are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I shall be like those who go down to the pit.
Oh how we rely on affirmation from others all the time... we feel good when we are able to go ahead and do something extraordinary, but it doesn’t mean as much unless someone tells us how good it is!
I can remember being alone in the sixth form study and building a house with a complete stack of cards... and nobody saw it! An old bus rumbled past and shook the table and everything fell down!
Don’t be disheartened when you don’t physically hear from God – He is always watching and always pleased when you do good!

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
What is it to be strong in God’s power? Well, how much can you do on your own? How much more can you do if you are constantly encouraged?
Now imagine having enough courage to do anything!
Now imagine having the strength to do anything with the courage you have now got!
This is the courage God gives you and the power He has – we just need to rely on that power and might!

Luke 2:51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.
When Jesus spent the days in the temple instead of listening out for and obeying His parents, it was because of His love for God the Father and not neglect for His parents.
We often face difficult choices in our lives, and we need to make decision for which there seems to be no right answer – but following God’s guidance will bring us through!
God wants us to obey Him, but also to keep an eye on the world and what we should be doing in and for the world and others around us.

Ephesians 3:1 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles
How do you see yourself? Do you think you are a free citizen or a prisoner in society, or somewhere in between?
I like the way Paul expresses himself as being a prisoner of Jesus for the sake of the gentiles – he was bound to serve the gentiles by Christ!
If we don’t see ourselves as being bound by Christ, are we fooling ourselves into believing we don’t need to do Christ’s bidding?

Mark 8:2 I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat.
Can you imagine following someone around just to hear them talk about God – and to not bring food with you for the journey...
And if that lasted more than three days! Would you be thinking about going back home and getting some food?
God knew the people had been totally taken in by Jesus’ words, and knew they needed to be fed – He had compassion on them and wanted Jesus to feed them.
Jesus obeyed!

Hebrews 11:32 And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets
Sometimes we don’t have time to tell people of all the things we know about God and how much He means to us... so what do we do then?
Sometimes it is not our task to bring the knowledge and history of God but instead to show people just how much God means to us.
Showing people how much we love God often make more sense than us trying to tell others what we know of God!

Isaiah 50:10 Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.
Who is it you listen to? Do you listen to the words your church leader tells you or do you like to make your own mind up?
If we find it hard to trust in what other people say, then we must listen to and obey what God has to say.
God uses people to try and get through to us all the time, we should try to listen to them comparing what they say with what God has said...

Psalm 84:12 Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.
Or we could word it something like: “It is those who put their faith and trust in Christ who will be happiest in their souls.”
How do you explain a feeling to someone else other than being able to almost touch the feeling because it feels so real?
God is faithful and merciful to make sure we do feel His presence and His love when we trust in Him. It is this love and peace which becomes a tangible handle we can hold onto that we feel.

Psalm 124:8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
We really do have the very best looking after us! Our God, creator of heaven and earth, is the one looking out for us!
What better guardian than the creator Himself! But not just God... We are surrounded by His angels who are on the ground with us and looking after us every step of the way.
If you make something and it goes wrong, you would probably be the in the best position to be able to fix things – God made us!

Number 6:24 The Lord bless you and keep you;
God told Moses to tell Aaron how to bless the people – and it started with these words!
When I finish talking to people on the phone, I very often end with “God bless you” and it never really made me stop and think until someone pointed it out to me!
We do need to ask God to bless other people all the time, but also to tell them you want God to bless them... that sort of thing may well be what allows them to see how God can and does bless them...
Happy New Year and God Bless You!
