Exodus 3:1 Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

Jesus did not rebel against God to choose the people He chose but rather continues on in His Father’s footsteps in His choices.

God chose people like this as well; Moses looked after Jethro’s flock (his father-in-law) and this position seems to have had a few people of great importance come from, such as David!

God does not look at what you have achieved, but rather what He can see your heart can achieve for Him. Trust Him, He knows!

Matthew 4:19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

Jesus did not go round seeking people in prominent position in society. He did not seek out the best known and respected people to follow Him! He chose ordinary folk like you and me.

Jesus was looking for something special in the hearts of the people He chose, not a large purse or a large ego.

When Christ picked you, and yes He has, He looked into your heart and saw potential – He saw something special!

Trust Jesus’ choice and allow Him to work through you!

1 Corinthians 1:27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

God does not choose the people like Goliath to show true power; that is what man chooses!

We look up to the tall and strong in stature whereas God looks up to the tall and strong in spirit.

We need to listen to what God wants, listen to whom He chooses and trust in what He does – that way we will be on the winning side every time!

1 Samuel 17:49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

When we listen to God, He is going to show us how we too can go down into the stream, pick up a few pebbles, and use them to slay our ‘Goliaths’!

God wants us to show we can do anything when we rely on Him for protection – David discarded Saul’s armour and still went forward because he knew he could rely on God!

When we show faith in our God, He shows mercy and strength through us to the rest of the world.

With God, we can do anything!

1 Samuel 17:8 Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me.

Can you imagine what it would have been like during this stand-off between the Israelites and the Philistines?

Each day Goliath would come out and shout about how good he was and how nobody was brave enough to fight against him! I’m sure he would had to prove it in the beginning – but now the Israelites were just too scared!

In our lives we have many ‘Goliaths’ which come up and show their heads; we too see them as insurmountable things in our lives…

… but are they?

1 Samuel 2:9 He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.

God does look after those who faithfully follow Him in truth and in love. I suppose it would be possible to make it look like you faithfully follow the Lord out of duty, but He is not after that.

Those who do things because that is what the church says you must do are simply following the will of the church; we need to follow God’s will in our lives.

God’s will is that we love and worship Him in truth so when we die we can join Him in heaven – for if we die alone, we will remain alone.

Psalm 115:7 They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats.

What do you get out of doing the things you love doing? A lot, I hope, otherwise we would not love doing them!

God loves to see and hear you worshipping Him and our worship should not be limited to singing a hymn or two! God loves all manner of worship – whatever we can do to give Him the glory!

God made sure He was amongst us in Human form (as Jesus) so He could demonstrate how much he knows about us.

Speak to God today and tell Him how you really feal!

Psalm 115:6 They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell.

How often do you talk to your pets – always I hope! How often do you talk to things like plants or inanimate objects?

Yes, I do talk to things when I cannot seem to get it right – but what real use is it? None! They cannot hear or understand. So why try and worship something which is not God?

Can God smell the incense offered up to Him? Well, Jesus could smell because he was human; it is not the smell we should offer but the loving act of doing something for God we should be offering.

Give God some love!

Psalm 115:5 They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see.

Stop and think a little about the things which are important in your life? Do you have any mindless things which take up far too much of your time?

It’s nothing new, really, mankind has been doing this from the beginning of time and we continue to do so; it’s just the things we do which change over time!

I don’t hear much good advice from some of the things which I think are important in my life; now I’m not talking about my partner or family and friends here, but the physical things which cannot speak or make sense of life!

Listen out for God and trust in Him, totally!

1 Corinthians 12:2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols.

How much does religion drive what you do? How much do you do because the church authorities or priest says you should do? How much do you do because Christ says so?

We do tend to get lost in our religious and authoritarian ways, following blindly instead of actually seeking what Christ says – because we trust people in charge.

But when people start to say you should be doing things which you know God does not agree with, STOP! Don’t go there.

Follow Christ and not mankind.

Ephesians 4:14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.

Christ wants each of us to be more mature Christians; this does not mean He wants us to be older!

If we want to be more mature Christians, then we need to grow in Christ – and that means getting to know Him better through having Him constantly in your life.

I know we all have our weak points and we all walk away from things from time to time, but Christ wants us to be close to Him always so He can guide us in everything we do!

Hebrews 10:28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

In Moses’ time, the witness of two or three people was enough to put someone to death.

How many people know about the things we have done wrong in our lives? How many witnesses could be against us!

God wants us to live by His rules as an example for others, when we give in to sin and temptations, many around us will see the example and know the repercussions!

We do affect many more people than we realise when we go against God’s will and His Word!

Exodus 10:16 Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the Lord your God and against you.

How many times do you say something just to get yourself out of a situation? I know I have done so far too many times!

Pharaoh continued to try and appease the God of Moses just to keep his people happy and stay in power; on more than one occasion!

God can see through the things we say and do – so let us step forward and try telling the truth, try doing what is righteous!

Exodus 9:27 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron. “This time I have sinned,” he said to them. “The Lord is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong.

Did you really mean what you just said? Did you really mean it?

Far too often we blurt out stuff and then regret it afterward because we know in our hearts we don’t mean it – but after the words have already come out, it is a bit late!

God wants us to stop and think about what we say and not just shout out things in the heat of the moment.

Everything He did for us was calculated and deliberate – try following Jesus’ example…

Matthew 27:4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.” “What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”

What you get from people and what you get from God are two different things entirely! But as Christians we need to stop acting like other people and start acting more like Christ!

Judas tried to stop what he had done wrong by returning the bride and saying that Jesus was innocent; it was men who chose not to believe the truth and wanted their own way instead.

Try to take a step back from situations in your life and make a difference to the way others see the world by being more like Christ today!

Matthew 26:75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

What do you do when things go wrong? If you have not been taught anything, then it’s anyone’s guess!

But when we have been exposed to God’s Word and read our bibles, we are going to remember some of those things we have read.

I guess the real test comes down to – will things have to go wrong before we listen to what we have heard, or do step out and try do things right before they go wrong?

John 21:17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

What is your reaction when God continue to ask you something? Do you turn round and get angry at Him, or do you stop and think what He is trying to achieve?

Far too often we react to things in our lives, and sadly, we react to God’s Word too.

What we should be doing, instead, is stopping for a short while and thinking about what God is trying to get from us.

He does know what is best – so it is best to stop and listen!

John 13:18 I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfil this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’

Just because Christ says we are not all clean does not mean we are all permanently excluded from His life! Far from it, we are all included until we choose to be excluded!

Judas may have sat with Christ and the disciples to eat, drink and live a life of a disciple; but he chose to sin against God by giving in to the temptation of money.

God knew we would all make mistakes and therefore prepared a sacrifice which would be enough to pay for all of our sins once and for all. Accept Jesus as your Saviour!

Psalm 41:9 Even my close friend, someone I trusted, one who shared my bread, has turned against me.

David wrote this many years ago; but we could have, Christ could have, many people could have…

When someone turns their heel against you, it is not just their heel but their whole body; and not just their body, but all who are accomplices in the act!

When we sin, we are bringing sin into our whole life and into the people around us too; God wants us to recognise just how damaging sin is so we work against it and keep up the daily exercise to keep us away from it!

Deuteronomy 32:15 Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; filled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the Rock their Saviour.

I love finding snippets like this in the bible! Right from the beginning God has been warning us the Christian life is going to be hard!

An athlete has to continue exercising in order to stay on form; when they stop exercising they may become fat and get lazy and stray away from their career or love for it.

As Christians we need to continue with our daily exercise to make sure we keep on top of things and don’t fall off the rail into temptation.

Yes, it takes work!
