Matthew 19:19 ‘Honour your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’

Besides the obvious “don’t kill, don’t cheat, don’t steal and don’t lie” Christ wants us to remember that we do need to think of others, not just our parents because other people need our help and support as well. There are so many people who do need help that it may be hard for us to see who we should help first… Well, start with your neighbours…

You will be surprised at how many people will accept help if you offer it; and then you may be equally surprised when others turn round and offer you help when they see you needing it.

Don’t wait to see if someone is “worthy” of being helped. Help them and show them that they are…

2 Peter 2:18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error.

One of the hardest things to accept in life is teachers who will tell you a bunch of lies instead of the truth. These are the people who should be giving you the truth so that you can learn; but there are those few that do not.

I am not talking of teachers in school but the people around you who will talk as if they know so much but tell you lies instead. Just when we escape from those people around us who we recognise as evil or bad company, we are at our most vulnerable and we may well believe a lie just because it sounds good enough.

Don’t give in because something sounds good – find out the truth because that is what God wants you to have.

1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”

No matter how good you think you are, if you continue to watch bad things, mix with bad people and listen to bad people, then you will start to become used to those bad things, allowing them into your life.

Before long you may well be doing the same things as them, those very things that may have turned you off in the beginning now become part of your life, part of your being.

God wants us to be separate from these characters so that we will not be corrupted – it is much easier to give in to them that to train them in what they should be doing!

Proverbs 13:20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.

If you are going to hang around with people who don’t care about themselves or their surroundings then you will pretty soon give in and become more like them.

But if you are willing to stand up against the rot and try to learn from those around you, then you will become wiser. The more you learn the more you will be able to help yourself and those around you. The more you learn from those around you the more you will be able to do!

But if you give in a just sit around waiting for things to fall apart around you, then that is all you will get…
